Modern Day Girl

She is wrapped up in ribbons
She will not come undone
She is sewed in the skin
Of a boy she un-spun

He is tangled and tied up
And knotted and torn
He lies on the floor
Only muscle and bone

She is higher than helium
She will not come down
She has eaten his words
And drank down his sound

He is silent and lipless
With one rotted lung
So he opens his mouth
And she cuts out his tongue

She was lipstick and powder
And curlers and smiles
Beauty and lightness
With feminine whiles

And she needs all his substance
To face the new world
He becomes the new face-paint
Of the modern day girl
