Just a Girl

I have played in the witch’s garden

eaten candy laced with wicked

I have glanced in my stepmother’s mirror

saw my stranger's face from her eyes

I have been a mermaid sister

singing underwater songs that went unheard

I have loved a beast or two

and failed to break a single curse

I have had a thousand unbirthdays

drank down tea with hatters mad

I have slept against my will

woken to find there are worse things than witches

I have lived the pages of books

when stripped of time and magic

imagining I was just a girl,

and that was enough.
